Jonathan Cohen is a British musician of extraordinary versatility with a variety of musical interests. His main love is chamber music, having regularly attended IMS Prussia Cove chamber music for many years. He has played chamber music with many of today's leading musicians, taught chamber music and likes to bring his chamber music experience and focus into other genres of music making. With his cello, Jonathan has played as a guest principal with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the London Chamber Orchestra, The King's Consort, The Gabrieli Consort, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He has also toured with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. His CD of Vivaldi cello concertos was released on Hyperion with great critical appreciation.
Another interest of Jonathan's is waving his arms and also playing the piano and harpsichord. This interest has realised itself recently in conducting and assisting in operatic productions. As assistant to William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, Jonathan has worked on productions of Rameau's Les Paladins, Mozart's Idomeneo, Haydn's Creation, and Hérold's Zampa, for which during 2008 he will conduct five performances at the Opéra Comique in Paris. For Emmanuelle Haim, Jonathan has worked on operatic productions including Monteverdi's Orfeo, Handel's Giulio Cesare, and 2008 sees him assisting on Mozart's La Nozze di Figaro (Lille) and Monteverdi's Poppea (Glyndebourne).
Jonathan is a founder member of the London Haydn Quartet, whose recent release of Haydn's Opus 9 string quartets on Hyperion was met with critical acclaim. With the quartet, he enjoys touring Europe and America bringing the astonishing creativity and genius of Haydn's works to varied audiences.
Jonathan Cohen, brings his enthusiasm for collaborative music making with flair and energy into varied musical genres. He has been a guest principal cello for many orchestras, a conductor and assistant conductor in operatic productions in Europe, a concerto soloist and a devoted chamber musician. |
